Julie Ellison: Biography
Current Solo Work
Julie has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s leading female guitarists. In the words of one reviewer:
“Julie is not just ‘good for a girl’, she is a true guitarist’s guitar player”.
Her music draws from ragtime, country blues, rock and classical influences to create a diverse range of
original songs and guitar instrumentals, interwoven with inventive re-workings of classical pieces and
guitar standards.
Julie is a columnist with ‘Acoustic’ magazine alongside the likes of jazz star Martin Taylor;
regularly attracts press coverage from both specialist music magazines and mainstream publications;
makes frequent broadcasts of live performances on BBC radio and has appeared on Yorkshire TV’s magazine
programme ‘Calendar’.
She has given concert performances at arts centres, theatres, guitar festivals and music festivals across the UK.
Julie's early years
Born and brought up in Kent, Julie started learning guitar when she was 9 years old and made
her first public performance at the age of 11. She joined her first band when she was 13, began
writing her own songs and had her first offer of a recording contract by the time she was 15.
Marriage meant a move to Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), where she started playing
rhythm guitar in a jazz trio and later took up bass guitar and developed an interest in improvisation.
A job as bass player in country band gave Julie her first real taste of life as a full time, professional,
touring musician.
A move North
After a divorce and a move to Yorkshire, Julie continued to perform as a solo artist and in a variety of duos, trios and bands
as a guitarist, singer songwriter and bass player with musical styles ranging from acoustic to rock music.
She also got involved with theatrical productions, touring with a three-woman theatre company,
for which she also wrote all the music and many of the sketches. Largely performing political humour,
this little company toured all over the UK.
Launch of Acoustyistics
A chance meeting at a music festival lead to a new partnership, in life and record label, with John Robinson
who now works alongside Julie as her manager and sound engineer. Acoustyistics Ltd was formed to handle all aspects of
Julie's career as a writer and professional, touring performer from a new base in rural North Lincolnshire.
